Head of Design

Verne are seeking an experienced Head of Design to oversee and manage the design aspects of data center construction and expansion projects.

Reports to: Chief Technology Officer

About the Role:

The Head of Design will lead the design team in developing innovative, efficient and sustainable data center solutions. Additionally, the Head of Design will support technical sales efforts and spearhead the development of customer solutions related to our data centers. Engagement with Verne operations will be of the utmost importance as every aspect of the design is ultimately handed to the Verne operational team. The role involves overseeing design processes from concept to completion, ensuring that all designs meet the highest standards of quality, performance, and compliance. Travel to Verne data centers and data center construction is required as part of the job function.

Key Responsibilities:

Design Coordination:

  • Oversee the creation of design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and reports across all Verne projects.
  • Ensure all designs align with Verne requirements, industry standards, regulatory compliance, and customer specifications.
  • Facilitate design reviews and approvals with Verne and key stakeholders.

Design Management:

  • Roll out the Verne standard design, considering site-specific design inputs, constraints, assumptions and requirements.
  • Work with the Project Management Organisation (PMO) to provide insight into potential cost implications arising from project and design-based development.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Serve as the primary contact for all design-related matters.
  • Work collaboratively with clients, contractors, and subcontractors to resolve design issues.
  • Coordinate designs with Verne operations.
  • Present design concepts and progress updates to clients and stakeholders.

Quality Assurance:

  • Implement and maintain quality control procedures for all design outputs.
  • Ensure adherence to best practices and standards in data center design.
  • Conduct regular design audits and reviews to identify and resolve issues.
  • Ensure that designs are executed with commissioning in mind.

Innovation and Sustainability:

  • Promote and implement sustainable design practices in all projects.
  • Stay updated on the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in data center design.
  • Encourage innovative approaches to enhance design efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the design team.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and technical assessments for new projects.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive design documentation.
  • Generate regular reports on design progress, risks, and issues.
  • Ensure all design changes are documented and effectively communicated.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution preferred. Minimum of 10 years of experience in design, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. Extensive experience in designing and building data centers or similar mission-critical facilities. Experience with design and implementation of critical facility monitoring and controls systems. Proficiency in 3D design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, BIM tools). Strong understanding of sustainability and green building practices. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
