Data Center Cooling and Automation Manager

Verne are seeking an experienced Data Center Cooling and Automation Manager to join our team in Finland.

As part of our exciting growth trajectory, we are expanding our team in Finland and are now looking for Data Center Cooling and Automation Manager.

The Data Center Cooling and Automation Manager is responsible for overseeing all HVAC systems and operations within the datacenter facility. This role involves ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and environmental conditions necessary to support continuous operations and maintain optimal performance of critical IT equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

HVAC Systems Management:

  • Oversee the design, installation, and maintenance of HVAC systems, including cooling towers, chillers, CRAH (Computer Room Air Handling) units, air handlers, and environmental monitoring systems.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations related to HVAC systems and environmental conditions.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs for HVAC equipment to minimize downtime and maximize reliability.

Environmental Control and Monitoring:

  • Monitor environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity, and air quality, to maintain optimal conditions for IT equipment operation.
  • Implement controls and alarms to detect and respond to deviations from setpoint conditions.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits to verify proper operation of HVAC systems and environmental controls.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability:

  • Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact through optimization of HVAC systems and operations.
  • Implement energy-saving measures, such as variable speed drives, economizers, and free cooling, to minimize energy consumption.
  • Monitor energy usage and implement strategies to optimize HVAC operation while maintaining reliability and performance.

Capacity Planning and Expansion:

  • Assess cooling capacity and demand requirements to support current and future datacenter operations.
  • Collaborate with facilities and engineering teams to plan and execute HVAC infrastructure upgrades and expansions.
  • Ensure scalability and redundancy of HVAC systems to accommodate growth and maintain high availability.

Emergency Preparedness and Response:

  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans for HVAC failures or environmental emergencies.
  • Conduct regular drills and exercises to test emergency procedures and readiness.
  • Coordinate with security and operations teams to ensure a swift and effective response to HVAC emergencies.

Vendor Management and Procurement:

  • Identify and evaluate HVAC equipment vendors and contractors.
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements for procurement of HVAC materials and services.
  • Monitor vendor performance and ensure compliance with service level agreements (SLAs) and quality standards.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate documentation of HVAC systems, including schematics, diagrams, and maintenance records.
  • Prepare regular reports on HVAC system performance, maintenance activities, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders and management regarding HVAC infrastructure status and issues.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Engineering, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Professional certification or licensure in HVAC engineering or a related discipline (e.g., Professional Engineer license, Supervisor of Pressure Equipment).
  • Several years of experience in HVAC engineering or facilities management, preferably in a datacenter or mission-critical facility environment.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems design, installation, and maintenance practices.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, codes, and regulations related to HVAC systems and environmental conditions.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex HVAC issues.
  • Leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proven project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource management.
